How to Get the Best Results from a Spray Gun

How spray guns work

Some people find it easier to master the spray painting technique if they understand how the gun works. If you’re one of those people, read on! If you just want an overview before you start, read our guide to spray painting techniques and crack on!

A spray gun works by obeying the laws of physics. When you pull the lever, the compressed air flow is increased. This creates a siphon or Venturi effect just before the nozzle and this then pulls up the paint from the pot.

The compressed air flow also gives energy & speed to the spray paint.

When you turn the flow adjustment knob, you change the aperture. This allows you to regulate the amount of paint being released at the nozzle and the shape of the spray fan.

How to spray a wooden fence

  1. Spray at an angle so you spray both the edge and the front of each panel of the fence at the same time.
  2. Start from the top and work your way down.
  3. Move the gun slowly downwards in the straight line keeping it parallel to the edge of the panel.

How to spray a metal gate

  1. Put a sheet of cardboard behind the gate you are going to spray.
  2. Spray at an angle so to spray as much of each bar, and one bar only.
  3. Start from the top and work your way down.
  4. Move the gun slowly downwards in a straight line keeping it parallel to the bar of the gate.

How to spray a rectangular panel

  1. Use the spray gun at an angle so to spray the whole of the edge and some of the top panel.
  2. Start from one corner and follow the arrows along the perimeter of the panel.

How to spray horizontal surfaces

  1. Start from one corner of the panel and follow the edge. Take care you remain parallel to that edge moving the spray gun slowly from left to right, and then right to left alternatively.
  2. Always move the spray gun in straight lines and remain at the same angle and distance from the surface.
  3. Use the spray gun at an angle pointing so that any spray mist lands over the unpainted area.

How to spray large panels

Essentially you repeat the procedure described for a horizontal panel. Spray one rectangular area at a time and overlap each area when you apply the paint.
